Jump to the full entry & travel map Siem Reap, Cambodia So much for the not giving money to kids. Today I set off in my tuk tuk with a full agenda of seeing the majority of the temples now that I got the big 2 out of the way. I started off with Ta Prohm where Tombraider was filmed, and being a movie buff, I had an over inflated expectation. I bet it is/was really cool, but there was extensive restoration going on at this one, and also a million...

The vibrant capital of Finland is a perpetual “most livable city” candidate and benefits from a progressive, cosmopolitan and erudite populace. Helsinki is the premier metropolis in Finland by a wide margin, with a population of 1.3 million people spread out over peninsulas, bays and islands. Scenic and fortuitous geography then, plays a massive role in Helsinki’s overall appeal. Photo credit When To Visit If frigid Nordic...

Jump to the full entry & travel map Bargara, Queensland, Australia Aside from the normal early morning regimes of sunrises, workouts and bike rides, we spent the latter part of the morning heading in to Bundaberg to visit the Bundaberg Rum distillery and the Bundaberg Ginger Beer factory. Both were fairly interesting self guided tours, the distillery tour requiring close toed…  Read More →

Jump to the full entry & travel map Saint Terese, Alaska, United States Some distant memories linger reinforced by sight, sound and smells. My first field trip was to Assateague Island . In my mind’s eye stands Prof. James H. Barrow holding forth on critters we found, encouraging us as if we had collected precious pearls. In addition to being a…  Read More →

Visit Japan and Tokyo for the food? That’s an emphatic yes. Japanese cuisine is a great reason to visit – nevermind the country’s castles, temples, gardens, and geisha. Eating in Japan is like a tour of historical attractions in its own right. And with more than a dozen types of specialty restaurants, my plan was to eat my way from one end of my week-long visit to the other. Japanese food on display (even the plastic samples look...

Jump to the full entry & travel map Florence, Tuscany, Italy From Becky: Ciao Peoples! We started off the day by going to the Galleria dell’ Accademia (again) for mum to take some photo’s, she asked for authorisation yesterday and they said come back tomorrow (in the morning…) so we did. Sam and Dad sat and played chess and I watched them while mum wondered off. We then walked down through the market to the Ponte Vecchio,...

Jump to the full entry & travel map Montevideo, Uruguay The flight to Montevideo took just under 3 hours and was with PLUNA, the national Uruguayan airline. We will remember the flight for 2 reasons – it is the first time we have seen cabin crew dressed in denim jeans, and it was very cold. Not having mentally adjusted to the change in climate from equatorial Brazil, we were still in short sleeves – and freezing. We found that...

Time yet again to dole out mad props (or is it prøps ) to another superb city in Scandinavia. Bergen, the exquisite European Capital of Culture in 2000 (one of nine that year) and venerable “Second City” of Norway, suffers, like many other Nordic destinations, from a lack of mainstream attention. This is my humble opinion. To be blunt, most of my friends and family want to go to Spain, France, Australia and the Caribbean. I hear...
